Q & A With Hannah: When is the best age to start Botox or Filler?

I received a question from a client’s daughter.  She writes:

“My mom has been seeing you for Botox and filler for the last 15 years. It’s hard to tell what she gets done as she always looks so natural. I am 36 yrs. old & my question is, "when is the best age to start Botox &/or filler? I don’t want to start too soon or wait until it’s too late.”  — Chloe

First, let me say that 36 is a great age to focus on ‘slowing down the aging process’.

To adopt healthy lifestyle habits because ‘lifestyle’  has been clinically proven to impact the health of our cells…. and we know that aging starts at the cellular level. I have a list of bio hacks you can work on such as:

  • Reducing refined sugar intake (don’t drink sugar if you can help it). Sugar accelerates the aging process.

  • Eating a variety of 30 different vegetables & fruit per week.

  • Practice the 30:30 rule: eat 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up in the morning.  Protein stimulates the growth of muscle fibers.

  • Resistance training 3x/week.

  • A consistent, daily skincare routine.

To answer your question: “when is the best age to start Botox & fillers?”

Being in your mid-30s it’s possible you can start with Botox right away to reduce existing facial lines that may be in between the brows, on the forehead, and around the eyes. At this early age, you may be able to smooth away lines and prevent further wrinkles with as little as 2 Botox appointments per year if you combine this with a consistent at-home skincare program.

Filler is different in that I like to use it on an “AS NEED” basis. Filler is used to improve facial profile balancing by increasing volume in specific areas of the face that is depleted or lacking.

  • You may benefit from filler in your 30s to improve the balance of your lip–to–chin profile if needed. Or you may not need filler until well into your 40s when facial fat compartments start to change in shape & size.

In my experience of 25+ yrs. of working with aging clients, the most noticeable & positive impact from fillers tends to occur in individuals in their 40s and early 50s when natural changes such as volume loss, become more evident.
