Cosmetic Treatment Anxiety

Having Anxiety About Advanced Cosmetic Treatments?  Here’s help!

Everyone loves the idea of having smoother, firmer skin with fewer wrinkles BUT many people have anxiety about the journey to achieve these results.

“What about the down time? Will I look “frozen” or unnatural? Will this hurt? Will I look like “Cat Woman?” These are all concerns that I hear every day.

True, advanced cosmetic treatments can be intimidating and we’ve all seen or heard stories of beauty treatments gone wrong. So, here are my 5 tips that outline what to expect in your treatments & will help you alleviate that anxiety.

“Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally, it comes from what you do consistently” – Marie Forleo

If looking and feeling your best is a priority to you then you know that a consistently healthy lifestyle is key. Aside from that, your skin requires daily maintenance with a regime of skincare products that include RETINOL, ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS, VITAMINS, and PEPTIDES. Having consistent skincare habits gets you on the right track when embarking on advanced cosmetic procedures to correct and enhance your appearance.

Tip #1: Treatment day requires a clean bill of health. If you are fighting a nasty cold, suffering from skin ailments (eczema, cold sores, or skin rash on or near the area being treated) then it is best to postpone your treatment. If you are taking antibiotics or other prescription medications, be sure to tell us as this may have an effect on the treatment and outcome. Try to avoid anti-inflammatory medication such as Advil or Aspirin if you are going to be having injectable treatments.

Tip #2: In front of beauty what is pain? There is a trade off: minimal pain and discomfort for gorgeous, glowing, smooth, firm skin!  Though your skin will be prepped with numbing cream prior to most procedures such as fractional laser, IPL, and cosmetic injections, you may still feel some discomfort. Either a warm, pinch from the laser or a tiny poke from a needle.  On a pain scale of 1 – 5 (5 being the worst pain you could feel), most clients state they feel a “2”.

Tip #3: The low-down on down time.  Non ablative lasers such as the fractional, and IPL that target sun damage may cause the skin to slightly darken, causing small patches of brown spots to flake off before it reveals more even toned skin. This process can take up to two weeks.  Chemical peels can sometimes cause the skin to break out especially if you have oily/acne prone skin.  This can often be prevented if you prep your skin with a daily regime of AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) cream to allow for dead cells to slough off the skin and prevent clogging of pores.

Cosmetic injections such as dermal fillers can cause redness and swelling at the site, with a chance of bruising. I recommend using homeopathic arnica gel and/or pills before, during, and after cosmetic injections to minimize the chances of bruising. Though down time is expected with advanced cosmetic procedures, they are for the most part, very minimal.

Tip #4: Fear of the unknown.  Many people fear the outcome of a cosmetic treatment. Will I look frozen? Will I look unnatural?  If you’re worried about that, I say it’s a good thing. It means your goal is NOT to look like an embalmed version of yourself. True enough, the use of neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport) and filler have the potential for creating a face that does not move naturally.  We have all seen examples of this.  The best approach to mitigate this is “micro steps”. Small amounts of filler in strategic areas of the face can create a natural, rested appearance that won’t give you away. When you have a balance of just the right amount of Botox you can enjoy a smooth forehead without eliminating natural facial expressions. We can discuss these options with you during your consultation.

Tip #5: Follow up care. The days and weeks after your cosmetic procedure, we recommend you visit with us for follow up. We assess your results and together collaborate to form a SKINCARE PLAN that you can use at home and provide recommendations for treatments in the future. We like to think of ourselves as your partners in your pursuits in the world of cosmetic treatments. Knowing you are not alone (we are only a phone call away) will hopefully alleviate some of your anxiety!

Bring out your INNER GODDESS! One of our favourite books on women’s health (and health = beauty) is “Goddesses Never Age” by Dr. Christiane Northrup. We LOVE how she explains how to be AGE-LESS! How you get older depends on your attitude not your genes! Check it out!
